Gardening Diary

You could be getting more from your garden and we are going to show you how.

This is the Bayleaf Garden Services garden diary which will take you on a journey through the gardening year, month by month, offering tips and all sorts of useful information that will help you get your garden up to scratch, whatever the weather.

SUMMER

June

  • Let foliage on spring bulbs wither naturally.
  • Continue to weed borders not hoeing too deep, in order that moisture is kept in the soil.
  • Prune and Deadhead all blooming plants in order to encourage new blooms.
  • Fertlise lawns though not in dry conditions.
  • Prune climbing roses after they bloom so that next year's blooms can be produced.
  • Make sure containers do not dry out. A drip-feed automatic watering system can be a godsend.
  • Continue to mow established lawns, allowing a little extra length in arid conditions.

July

  • Continue to deadhead flowering plants.
  • Water hydrangeas and other moisture loving plants, if they start to droop. Apply a mulch round the base to retain moisture.
  • Fertilise bedding plants and pots/containers to encourage late blooms.
  • Water plants early in the morning so the foliage can dry off before the hot sun scorches it.
  • If the weather is hot and dry, leave lawns to grow longer. Do not water lawns irregularly as this promotes thatch. Small lawns can be watered by automatic systems but they require a licence.

August

  • Deadhead flowers as they fade.
  • Continue watering containers daily.
  • Keep ponds aerated by adding fresh water.
  • Sit back and enjoy.
